Eligibility

Small-scale renewable systems that may qualify for certificates include:

– Solar photovoltaic (PV) panels

– Solar water heaters

– Hydro systems

– Wind turbines and air source heat pumps

To qualify for STCs, there are guidelines you must also follow to make you eligible and ensure your system if fully compliant and installed in accordance to industry standards.

For example, solar panels must be installed by an accredited solar installer like Hielscher Electrical and must use approved solar systems and inverters that adhere to the Australian and New Zealand standards.

Queensland state solar rebates and incentives

QLD has no state level rebates for solar panels at the time of publishing this article.

However, there is a Feed-in Tariff (FiT) you may receive from your electricity provider. The FiT is generally a retail rate that homeowners get for the excess power generated by their panels and exported back into the main grid.

In other words, Feed-in tariffs enable homeowners to enjoy discounted electricity bills and increased return on their solar investment.

The excess kilowatt-hours mean a lot hence high FiT rates encourage people to install larger solar systems to maximally benefit financially from unused energy output fed into the grid.

There are rules that govern FiT though they vary depending on one’s location:

• At the time of publishing, Regional QLD has a minimum FiT set at 6.583 cents/kWh

• South East QLD has no minimum FiT (according to the Energex network within the Brisbane area), though most energy retailers offer between 10 and 18 cents/kWh.

Of course, these rates seem lower especially when compared with the FiT of 44 cents/kWh offered under the Queensland Solar Bonus Scheme that has been discontinued, but the true value from your solar system is through self-consumption.

Keep in mind that the highest FiT rate isn’t necessarily the best. In most cases, electricity retailers give generously with one hand and cruelly take with another in that if they pay more for your feed-in energy, they will charge you a lot more when you want to purchase electricity.

And hey,

If you’re there wondering which Queensland energy provider has the best solar feed-in tariff, below are some electricity retailers with good rates of cents per kilowatt-hour in 2021:

– Mojo Power– offers 18 (c/kWh)

– ReAmped Energy– offers 17 (c/kWh)

– AGL– offers 15 (c/kWh)

– Discover Energy– offers 13 (c/kWh)

Note: The above information is subject to change since rates keep fluctuating.

So, are Queensland feed-in tariffs worthwhile? Absolutely! Most energy retailers offer FiT making solar more appealing to many. Ensure the FiT of your choice reduces your electricity bills and pays you well for energy fed into the grid.

A common question among our clients…”what shall I base my ultimate decision on”? Well, simply consider whether higher solar FiT rates or lower power rates is better for you based on your consumption habits and situation

How Much Is the Solar Panel Rebate in Cairns, Queensland?

The 5kW/h solar system is the most common in QLD, and with the Solar Rebates Queensland, every household is entitled to an average of $4,215 to help reduce installation costs. Ideally, the average rebate provides about a third of the reduced price.

For example, if a resident installed a 5kW/h solar system, they can expect about 89 small-scale technology certificates (STCs) in return and around $3,514 worth of rebates. This estimate varies based on the current market value of STC at the time of publishing this article.

The sum of your QLD solar rebate is dependent on several factors and can be calculated based on your location, system size and existing STC market prices.

Note: The solar rebate is not available on a state level.

Do I Qualify and How Do I Apply for the Solar Rebate in Queensland?

Conditions outlined by the CEC to be eligible for the solar rebate are:

• Must be the primary owner of the place of residence where the solar power system will be installed, and hold all the relevant documentation to prove ownership.

• Solar power systems installed don’t exceed 1000W nominal capacity and a 250Mwh annual production.

• Solar systems are installed within 12 months of claiming any STCs. This is made easier if the right to claim is assigned to the solar company at the beginning.

Notably, you don’t have to make an application for the solar rebate by yourself. The rebate amount is usually captured by the solar installer at the point sale. This explains why solar panels are considerably inexpensive and appealing to Queenslanders.

Both state and Federal governments review and introduce new rebates and incentives for solar systems.
