Central inverters, commonly used in solar photovoltaic systems, convert direct current (DC) power from a series of interconnected solar panels into alternating current (AC) suitable for the grid. However, the entire system’s efficiency can be compromised by the lowest-performing panel, a drawback addressed by solar micro-inverters. These small inverters are placed behind individual panels, enabling direct DC-to-AC conversion for each, thereby optimizing output regardless of panel inconsistencies. This innovation stems from the vision of Enphase founder Martin Fornage, who, after observing inefficiencies in his ranch’s solar array, co-founded the company in 2007 with Raghu Belur and Paul Nahi. Enphase revolutionized the industry by introducing its first microinverter in 2008, achieving significant market penetration by 2010. Enphase Energy has since diversified its offerings, entering the energy storage market and unveiling the Ensemble system in 2020. The company, under the leadership of CEO Badri Kothandaraman since 2017, has seen continued innovation and expansion, including the IQ8 series microinverters launched in 2021 and strategic acquisitions like ClipperCreek for EV solutions.
