In my nearly two decades in the Australian solar industry, I’ve seen technology change dramatically, markets rise and fall, and manufacturing move offshore at an alarming rate. But last Thursday, 31 July 2025, here in Cairns, I witnessed something that feels like a turning point. At Hielscher Electrical’s local office and warehouse, Brenton and the Hielscher Electrical Cairns team welcomed Tindo Solar’s representative to showcase their latest flagship product — the Walara 430G3P — and, more importantly, to confirm a major price shift that could finally put premium Australian-made panels within reach for far more North Queensland homes and businesses.
The Price Shift That Changes the Game — From Ambition to Achievement
Back in 2012, I published an article on Australian Solar Quotes about a new Adelaide-based manufacturer called Tindo Solar. At the time, they were a bold newcomer with a 60MW factory, openly declaring their intent to challenge China’s dominance in solar manufacturing. At the time, their managing director, Adrian Ferraretto, saw no reason why solar panels couldn’t be made competitively in Australia — especially with automation reducing the impact of labour costs. It was an audacious claim, voiced at a time when Chinese imports were flooding the market and Australian manufacturing was shrinking fast.

Fast forward to 2025, and that original ambition is finally bearing fruit in a measurable way. Tindo has survived more than a decade of intense global price pressure and has emerged with tindo solar panels prices that now sit less than 20% higher than leading imports. That’s a far cry from the days when a Tindo panel could cost 50% more — a gap that placed them firmly in the “premium, but out of reach” category for many buyers.
“We’ve always been proud to offer Australian-made products, but we also know price matters to our customers,” said Brenton Hielscher, Director of Hielscher Electrical. “Bringing the price gap on Tindo’s premium panels down to under 20% makes it a far easier decision for people who want to buy local and still get world-class performance.”

This isn’t about discounting to chase volume. It’s the result of strategic manufacturing expansion, operational efficiency gains, and smart investment — including the recent $34.5 million Solar Sunshot grant. In 2012, Tindo was talking about proving quality and building trust. In 2025, they’re not only proving it — they have the independent CHOICE recognition and manufacturing muscle to back it up.
Walara 430G3P — More Than Just Another Panel
When you’ve worked in solar as long as I have, you get used to seeing “new” panels released every year. Many are just incremental updates, referencing my last Tindo Solar post in 2021 where the team were proud to announce Tindo’s biggest solar panel. The Walara 430G3P feels different.
This is the first N-type solar panel manufactured in Australia, a significant milestone in our industry. Built at Tindo’s Mawson Lakes facility in South Australia, it’s part of the company’s eighth-generation Walara Series — the culmination of years of design, testing, and feedback from installers like us working in real Australian conditions.

Key innovations matter here. The 35mm rigid frame is more than a cosmetic tweak; it’s designed to reduce flex and protect cells from micro-cracks caused by our extreme climate. Less flex means better integrity over decades. Combine that with Tindo’s zero-defect manufacturing process — over 25 quality checks before a panel leaves the factory — and you have a product built for longevity, not just performance on day one.
The Walara comes in multiple finishes — white-back, black-back, and bi-facial — giving flexibility for different architectural styles without sacrificing efficiency.
CHOICE Recognition — A Legacy of Performance
Earlier this year, Tindo’s previous flagship, the 410W Karra solar panel, earned CHOICE’s top rating among 15 rooftop solar modules tested. It was the only panel to meet and exceed its claimed output, delivering 417W against a 410W specification, with an overall Expert Rating of 92%.
That’s not just marketing spin; as an industry veteran, I can tell you that independent validation like this is gold. Customers often hear claims from manufacturers, but CHOICE’s testing cuts through. While the Karra has now been retired, the Walara 430G3P inherits its engineering DNA and improves on it with higher capacity and advanced cell technology.
Australian Manufacturing Is Back in the Conversation — From Vision to Scale
When I first gained insight into Tindo’s factory over a decade ago, Australian manufacturing in the solar sector felt more like a small act of defiance than an industry. In 2012, Tindo was a young company with a clear vision: to prove that Australia could make premium solar panels locally and compete with the world’s biggest producers. They even spoke about one day exporting to China — a statement that, at the time, some saw as ambitious bordering on impossible.
Today, that vision looks far less like a dream and far more like a business plan in motion. Tindo remains the only solar panel manufacturer in Australia, but they’re no longer a boutique operation serving a niche. Backed by a $34.5 million Federal Government Solar Sunshot Program grant, they are scaling annual capacity from 20 MW to 180 MW — enough to power around 35,000 homes each year — and conducting a feasibility study for a gigafactory capable of producing 1 GW annually.
“As an installer, it’s exciting to see an Australian manufacturer reach this level of production,” said Brenton Hielscher. “It means we can offer a locally made, climate-ready panel to more customers without long wait times or pricing that puts it out of reach.”

This expansion will create new jobs, strengthen the domestic supply chain, and allow Tindo to manufacture more components in-house — from aluminium frames to junction boxes. Where in 2012 they were fighting for a place in a market dominated by imports, in 2025 they are proving that local manufacturing can be competitive, scalable, and still deliver the kind of durability our climate demands.
Why This Matters for Cairns
Here in Cairns, conditions test solar panels in ways many manufacturers underestimate. High humidity, salt air, cyclonic winds, and intense UV exposure all accelerate wear. A panel designed in Europe for mild conditions may pass lab tests, but in the field up here, weaknesses show quickly.
This is where the Walara 430G3P’s engineering makes sense — rigid framing to minimise flex, components selected for corrosion resistance, and quality control designed to catch faults before they leave the factory.
When paired with the new Federal Solar Battery Rebate, which offers point-of-sale discounts of more than 30% on battery systems, the financial equation improves further. Combining this with the existing solar panel rebate makes it possible for more Cairns households and businesses to install larger solar + battery systems that deliver real energy independence.

Performance You Can Measure
Tindo’s openness about performance is something I respect. Through the Desert Knowledge Australia Solar Centre, anyone can compare real-time output from Tindo solar panels alongside leading global brands, under identical Australian conditions. In an industry that often hides behind controlled test lab numbers, this kind of transparency is rare — and telling.
As an industry expert, seeing that data align with my own field experience reinforces my confidence in recommending the Walara series to companies and customers who value reliability and long-term performance over short-term savings.

A Range of Choices, Not One-Size-Fits-All
It’s important to acknowledge that not every customer will choose Tindo, even at the new price point. Every project has its own priorities — budget, space constraints, aesthetic preferences, or specific technical requirements.
That’s why at Hielscher Electrical, we also supply and install a variety of top-performing brands from around the world, including LONGi, AIKO, Trina, and others. Some of these deliver exceptional efficiency at competitive prices, others offer unique warranty conditions or specialist features that make them the right fit for certain applications.
The role of an experienced installer is to match the right technology to the customer’s needs — and after nearly 20 years, I can say with certainty that the “best” panel is the one that meets the customer’s goals today while still performing a decade from now.
Looking Ahead — A Better Balance Between Quality and Cost
The meeting on 31 July wasn’t just about unveiling a new solar panel. For Brenton and the team, it felt like a moment to reset the conversation around Australian-made solar — particularly here in Cairns and across North Queensland. With the Walara 430G3P now competitively priced, backed by expanded manufacturing capacity, and supported by independent performance recognition, there’s finally a credible premium option for Cairns locals who want to invest in both quality and the Australian manufacturing economy.
In a region where weather extremes — from summer humidity to cyclone-season winds — can quickly expose weaknesses in cheaper imports, the combination of robust engineering and local accountability becomes more than a selling point; it’s peace of mind. The Walara 430G3P isn’t just built to perform on day one — it’s designed to deliver that same performance 15 or 20 years down the line.
In a solar market that too often measures value only in cents per watt, I believe the real worth lies in longevity, stable performance, and the broader benefits of supporting Australian Manufacturing. When competitive pricing and premium durability meet, we get a healthier, more resilient solar industry — one that works for consumers, installers, and the country.
